And it’s called RRCD.
Race Registration Compulsion Disorder.
Disclaimer: RRCD is a serious, dream-like condition. You may easily contract RRCD from rubbing up against a spin class full of triathletes, going to a sprint tri and crossing that finish line for the first time, or watching the Ironman World Championships on NBC. RRCD has been known to appear in mild cases after participation in a first 5k or 10k. RRCD, once contracted, may be spread to family members, peers or innocent co-workers. RRCD may cause you to register, zombie-like, for races completely out of your so-called league, giving you feelings of greatness, coupled with a meth-like rush. Contain your RRCD to home, as RRCD is dangerous and slow on the iPhone.
Okay, so maybe you don’t have this disease, but I do. And a bad, swollen case of it.
See, I think if I register for a race, that I will actually do it.
So I collect race registrations like coins, hording them in my email inbox likes warm fuzzy blankets. Just this week, I have registered myself (and the Expert) for another 70.3, a sprint tri, a half marathon and….(ah-hem) a full marathon (even though I swore my first full marathon [if ever] would be in an Ironman), and marked the calendars for the rest.
I’m not completely out of my mind. RRCD is actually quite effective for me.
I compulsively registered for my first Olympic tri after never even running 4 miles. I registered for my first half-Iron before even completing an Olympic. Somehow, knowing the races are out there, makes me move forward.
Oh, and also announcing to you guys via blog-o-thons. Accountability is a big thing.
Recovering from an injury is on the books for 2012, but that doesn't stop me from perusing race sites like a porn addict! I hear ya about the accountability… It's why I blog, whether anyone reads it or not. GO FOR IT!! ALL OF IT!!
Oh I clearly have this disease. I have already registered for the Derby Half/Marathon Festival…registered my girlfriend for the Marathon as a birthday present (that was just mean, huh) and have marked off the registration openings on my calendar for the other races I plan on doing. It is definitly contagious.
I most definitely do this too – although I don't know if it's as severe a case of RRCD as yours. I try to always have at least 1 more event on the calendar for after the event I'm currently training for. Usually that morphs into 2 or three extras though. Right now I'm training for the Princess Half, but I've also got the SRQ half marathon, an Olympic tri and the MS150…so I'm booked up through April.
Like you, I schedule everything super early so I'm sure to follow through with training. Otherwise I'll totally slack off!
I register for races due to the fact that I dislike training. If I register, and pay my money, I feel obligated to train for the race. Sounds silly I know, but it is a way I have found to keep my lazy butt off the couch and training! Works for me!
I'm with JonDot, having an actual event to prepare for keeps me moving. Without races I fear I will regress to the lazy couch potato I was before 🙂 So far for 2012 I have my first tri (a baby one though), two 5Ks, at least one 10k and my first half marathon… Well, my first half marathon once the registrations open *looks at watch impatiently* My name is Kristin and I, too, have RRCD 🙂
Signing up for a race is definitely good motivation to stay active. I'm signed up for Wildflower Long Course (70.3) as a training event in May, will do an Olympic distance as a training event in June, and likely Vineman AquaBike in July as the lead-up races for the big one — Ironman Canada.
What have I gotten myself into?!?!
So what's it called when you're making a mental list of the to-do's for 2012, but not actually REGISTERING for them?!?!? That's me! My 2 big plans for 2012 are my first Olympic Tri and a FULL marathon! OMG! I am already registered for the Cleveland Half Marathon in May. I'm guessing I'll be throwing in some more half marathons and sprint triathlons, but only time will tell! 🙂
I totally have it, and trying to control myself. So far all I have on the books is a 17K trail run in December, Oakland half marathon in March, and Wildflower Olympic in May (Molly I'll see you there, are you camping?). Nothing too far out of my comfort zone but I'm looking for a half iron distance to do, sad (but not too sad) that I'll be in Italy for Vineman 70.3 AND Barb's Race since that course is lovely and on the easier side.
I couldn't agree more. The only way I ever get my butt off the couch is if I have a goal.
Yep, me too, I've got it too. But I've been known to over commit myself when succumbing to this addiction. I had to skip two races i registered for this year, the first was because i scheduled a race while i was supposed to be camping, duh!, the second because of our financial situation, the gas and hotel would cost more than the money I lost due to not doing the event. Oh well lesson learned. Still big plans for next year. Lavaman with Team in Training in April, Wildflower Olympic in May, and my big one next year is a Barb's Race in July.
